Issuance of the DS-2019 for your dependent(s) does not give your dependent(s) J-2 status in the United States. There are two ways for your dependent(s) to obtain J-2 status. 这些包括:(1)申请美国的J-2签证.S. 领事馆 abroad and (2) applying for a change of status to J-2 from within the United States.

在你的受抚养人获得J-2签证后, they may enter the United States in J-2 status using their DS-2019(s). They will receive stamps in their passports indicating “J-2” status and “D/S” for duration of status. Before leaving port of entry they should make sure the stamp is in the passport correctly. 家属 are not required to check-in at OGS upon arrival.

Your dependent(s) may apply for a change of status from within the United States by submitting an application to the USCIS after obtaining a DS-2019 from OGS. 有资格申请改变身份, your dependent must be in valid nonimmigrant status and the application for change of status must be received by the USCIS prior to the end date of your dependent(s) current nonimmigrant status. If your spouse is submitting the application for change of status, unmarried children under the age of 21 may be included in the application as long as the children are in the same status as your spouse, 或者是你配偶的派生身份.
The following conditions render an individual ineligible to apply for a change of status
- 持有F, D, K和M身份

- J-1 and J-2 nonimmigrants with a 2-year home residency requirement

Individuals in J-2 status are allowed to study full or part-time. Children in J-2 status may also attend public or private elementary, middle or high schools. If full-time study is desired it may be advantageous to change status to F-1 or J-1 student.

Individuals in J-2 status are allowed to work in the United States. 然而, they must first obtain an 就业 Authorization Document through the United States Citizenship and Immigration service. The application may only be submitted after the dependent has gained J-2 status.

Once you receive your EAD you will be eligible to apply for the Social Security Card

Online file OR mail your completed application to the address listed on the instructions for the I-765.
In 2 to 4 weeks you will receive a mail notification from USCIS confirming the receipt of your application. Once you know your case number listed in the upper left corner of the notification, 您将能够检查您的申请状态 在线.
